(1) The sync connection is how the strobe connects to the camera housing. Fibre optic systems use the cameras internal strobe to signal the main strobe to fire. The sync cable is actually fibre optic that connects to the strobe and somewhere on the camera housing where it can see the camera flash. Electronic systems use a multi core electrical cable, the housing requires a special connection to allow the use of these types of strobes.
(2) STTL mode is unique to Inon and first introduced on their D2000 strobe. The STTL mode attempts to exactly mimic the cameras built in flash and allows the camera in fully automatic or 'P' mode to fully control the strobe power. Now point and shoot photograph is available underwater while using an external strobe!
(3) Strobe uses an external strobe metering system. The strobe controls the flash output dependant on the reflected light thrown back by the subject during a preflash or main flash. The camera aperture setting needs to be manually set on the strobe.
(4) Requires use of Ikelite EV controller for proper manual use with digital cameras.The EV controller can be driven optically or electrically.
(5) These manufacturers numbers should not be taken literaly, most are too high, check the individual strobe data for our comments. The numbers in brackets are with a diffuser (supplied with strobe) fitted.
(6) Guide numbers give the maximum subject distance in meters that the strobe can effectively reach with an ISO setting of 100. Numbers given in the table are above water. Underwater distances are much less. Convention says that the guide number underwater will be half that above. However underwater photography requires that you are close to the subject. Certainly no more than 2m while using a strobe. This makes guide numbers really only a power comparisson between the different models. Far more important is the angle or area of the reef they will effectively light.
